I was walking to the market in Greece when I saw it. Me “walking to the market” is a strange occurrence on it’s own. (I detest food shopping and loathe cooking. However, I do love to eat. š) And on my walk to said market, I came across yet another strange occurrenceā¦a rusted out car. Broken down. Clearly long past its days of going anywhere.
Yet there it was, covered in beautiful, blooming vines! Bright purple flowers and thin green stems curled into the cracks of the car doors and around the tires. They climbed around the mirrors and completely engulfed the hood. The car obviously hadnāt moved in years.
But, from the outside? Ohhhh, from the outsideā¦it looked magical!!
My superpower is that I can turn anything into a metaphor. Well this whole scene got me thinking about how so many of us are living life like this car: Merely existing. Not going anywhere. Completely and utterly STUCK! But we’re trying to make it all appear to be okay on the outside.
We stay in jobs that don’t fulfill us. We keep committed to routines that no longer serve us. We numb ourselves with overworking, drinking, and scrolling. We’ve become experts at pretending. We throw in a dash of some magic to cover all this up: Vacations. Important jobs. A new car. We read self-help books. Watch videos to be at our best.
Yet underneath it all, we are STUCK!
You might be an expert at fooling others, but there is no fooling yourself!! Your soul knows when it’s feeling alive and it also knows when it’s slowly fading away day-by-day. You’re trapped in the parking lot, not going anywhere. But hey, at least you have the picture of a wonderful life!
Let me tell you my friend, in case you haven’t looked in the mirror lately, YOU ARE NOT AN OLD RUSTED OUT CAR! You do not have to be stuck. As hard as it is to hear:
stuck is a choice.
Which is why I’m inviting you to stop waiting for the perfect moment and make a different choice. To take a step your future self will thank you for. To reflect on the question from Mary Oliver’s poem The Summer Day: “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”
I talk to leaders every single day that are caught up in the rat race. Instead, I want you to think about squeezing out every ounce of joy that you can from your one wild and precious life! And I want to support you in that process. How?
